Nascido na Europa, o movimento Art Decó surgi nas primeiras décadas do século XX, como uma
resposta literalmente gráfica a uma sociedade em vias de modernização e industrialização
onde os ornamentos praticamente artesanais e orgânicos do Art Noveau e a riqueza de detalhes do Ecletismo (onde o Neoclassicismo,
Neorromântico , Neogótico, Neobarroco...
Eram misturados, com objetivo final de demonstrar a imponência pelo exagero ), já
não tinham mais espaço. Com o avanço da tecnologia da construção- civil, encontrou-se
na geometrização das formas proposta pelo Art
Decó uma solução para demonstrar imponência sem perder o ar de moderno, com
um funcionalismo também muito maior. Podemos ver estes conceitos aplicados em
boa parte dos arranha-céus americanos da primeira metade do século XX, onde a geometrização
esta muito associada ao escalonamento no topo (“escadinha”), devido também a Leis
vigentes por lá na época que obrigavam o afunilamento de prédios muito altos para
circulação de ventos e entrada de luz.
Tendo sido e continuando a ser objeto de desprezo de muitos críticos
de arquitetura, verdade seja dita, os ritmos geométricos do Art Decó podem não ser os mais “puristas”,
mas são sinônimos de elegância através do tempo.
O que pouco se nota é a proximidade que este estilo tem com
os cariocas. Este post tem a iniciativa
comentar um pouco e aguçar nosso olhar pelas ruas cariocas. Copacabana poderia
ser considerada a princesinha do Art Decó.
De forma mais discreta do que no exterior, o estilo é visto por aqui em
portarias de edifícios e sutis afunilamentos de alguns prédios residências nos
andares mais altos. As linhas geometrizadas do Cristo Rendentor também seguem o
estilo, talvez por isso que esta estátua consegue cativar inclusive os ateus,
adornando o Corcovado e nossa cidade por sua sobriedade e beleza. "Oui, nous sommes art decó aussi"! |

Come to light in Europe, the Art Decó movement started in the first decades of XX century, as a grafic answer to a society in a process of modernization, industrialization where crafts ornaments in organic shapes such as the ones seeing in Art Noveau, and all the details of Eclecticism (where Neoclassic, Romanticism, Necrotic, Neobaroque... Where mixed, with the main purpose of showing-off by being over),weren't anymore suitable. With new technologies to build-up the geometrical shapes proposed by Art Deco became a solution to show power without losing the modern appearance, also being extremely functional. At the american skyscrapers of the first half of the XX century, we can see all this concepts applied, where geometries is associated to the stagger (“stair look”) also because of the period's Laws which forced the bottleneck of the extremely high building, to allow wind circulation and light entrance.
Even not being well seeing by some of architecture critics, the geometric rhythms of Art Decó can not be the “purest”, but are and will always be associated to elegance through time.
What isn't always noticed is how near this style is close to cariocas (Rio citizens). Copacabana could be considered the little princess of Art Decó. More discrete than what can be find abroad, the style can be seeing down here at building's main entrance and really soft bottleneck of some residential buildings. The geometric lines of Christ Redeemer also follow the style being maybe the reason why it captives everyone, christian or not, adorning our city and the buck with sobriety and beauty. "Oui, nous sommes Art Decó aussi"!
